FAST Day 20/40--Healing the Broken Body

Healing the Broken Body
Lessons from the Professional Review

"Review and learn from what happened,
support good practice, and restore relationships." (p. 113)

“These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord…Therefore love truth and peace.” Zechariah 8:16,19
.
Antonello da Messina, circa 1486

This is My body which is given for you...
Luke 22:19
Satan has demanded permission to sift all of you like wheat…
Luke 22:31
For if they do these things when the tree is green,
what will happen when it is dry?

 Luke 23:31
Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer…

Warm greetings!

A reminder
of the purpose of my Into Integrity FAST. It is to call attention to--and confront--the lack of disclosures by specific organizations/leaders/people affected by the international Nordic Capital Investment KB fraud (NCI) as well as the related dismissals that Michele (my wife) and I have received. I am fasting for genuine contrition and striking for resolute action within the Church Mission Community (CMC).

Reflections on FAST Day 20
(combined food FAst and hunger Strike)

In this seventh pod-post, the final one in the first half of the 40 day FAST, I want to bring our attention to Rand Gueberts’ Professional Review which is posted on the Loving Truth and Peace weblog. Below are verbatim excerpts from the overview/purpose on the weblog. I also strongly encourage you to carefully read and consider the conclusions in the Integrated Summary (two pages) as well as the summaries of  any of the four main sections of interest to you (excerpts below also).

Professional Review
Overview and Purpose for Sharing It
"This review [investigates] several overlapping matters that have affected the mission, member care, and church community...[and] aspires to promote transparency, accountability, good practice, and healthy relationships." (Proposal, p. 112)

"This professional review has been organized to draw together the various events that have led to the dismissal of Drs. Kelly and Michele O’Donnell from YWAM [and other organizations/networks] and to the potential loss of millions of dollars by investors in Nordic Capital Investments (NCI) and Stichting Dutch Investments (SDI).  Many of these events are related and overlap, and this review attempts to place them in context." p.1

We are sharing this review now with the support of many colleagues in hopes that the international Church-Mission Community (CMC) and general public will get a better understanding of the widespread and ongoing reality of corruption--outside as well as inside the CMC. Corruption is far more than financial crime, since it also includes many other abuses of power and exploitation, such as sexual misconduct, cover-ups, silencing others, and leadership/group rationalizations. We hope that this review will encourage the CMC and general public to hold their leaders accountable--and themselves--for the good governance, responsible management, and personal integrity needed to prevent corruption and bring corruption into the light.

More specifically, we also hope there will be a far more accurate understanding of the NCI et al. fraud, including what has contributed to obscure it and cover it up, and the heavy price paid by many people confronting it, especially within the CMC (e.g., discrediting, dismissals, physical danger). There is much to learn from this protracted case of corruption and the largely unanswered calls for assistance via verifiable disclosures and independent reviews. In spite of the long-term and ongoing damage, the time is still opportune for people to reverse course and act with integrity. As stated in the concluding paragraph of the Integrated Executive Summary:
"YWAM and other groups are only being challenged now because of the integrity and perseverance of the O’Donnells and those who have stood by them in these last difficult years.  The need for accountability and restitution in varying degrees clearly lies with YWAM, Le Rucher, WEA-MC, MC-E and involved churches [Youth With A Mission, Le Rucher Ministries, World Evangelical Alliance-Mission Commission, Crossroads Church etc.].  In authoritarian settings nearly everyone is too vulnerable to stand up to the power of the leaders—staff have limited rights and limited resources on which to rely.  The time has come for the truth to be known and justice to prevail, without which there can be no proper basis for organizational health and reconciliation.  For everyone involved it is not too late to act with integrity and seek redress, both publicly and privately."

Keep in mind that Mr. Guebert conducted his 2008 initial investigation without the benefit of the 3000+ pages of documents released in 2010 by the Swedish government--focusing on the NCI fraud case. The Swedish documents fill in many of the details about how NCI operated and who was affected; provide a context for why fear, cover ups and dismissals could be so widespread in the CMC; and by and large confirm the concerns and conclusions in the initial investigation. Additional organizations have also been approached for assistance, for example to investigate how they (and their members or member organizations) have been affected, share information, and hold people accountable in light of good practice standards, but to little avail.

For an updated summary regarding NCI and related events (e.g., court cases, requests for assistance, lack of disclosures), we encourage you to read The Summary and Summons in Part Two in the recent entries on the PETRA People weblog: Healing the Body--Loving Truth and Peace.

Professional  Review
Conclusions from Section Summaries (excerpts)

YWAM has important issues to address related to corporate governance, financial accountability, and staff management.  YWAM needs to demonstrate to itself that it is able to care for itself as an organization and not be victimized by authoritarian and deceptive leaders.

In conclusion, the record does not indicate any justifiable grounds for Kelly’s dismissal.  On the contrary, the O’Donnells have done their best to act with integrity and perseverance.  Their letters to Iain Muir were written carefully and respectfully, and provide ample evidence to substantiate their commitment to good practice and good relationships. YWAM should arrange for an independent review of the circumstances leading to the O’Donnells dismissal, and for acknowledgment of the results of this review and any restitution that might be required.  YWAM leadership should also review other recommendations made in this Executive Summary.

Opportunities should be sought for the O’Donnells to reconnect with individuals in MC-E, the MemCa LT, and the WEA-MC EXCO, and to take the time necessary to exchange perspectives and clearly understand what happened…..Also, the dismissal of the O’Donnells from MC-E…in July 2006 and of Kelly from MemCa in June 2006 does not seem to be at all warranted… the O’Donnells have attempted to reach out to their former colleagues in order to meet with them since the events of 2006, but without success—perhaps the day is soon coming when this will occur.

YWAM and the Le Rucher Board, past and present, should accept responsibility for their relationship to Le Rucher, and not only recognize the people who have been hurt, but take steps to ensure that harm does not come to others.   Former staff will find healing when YWAM and the LR Board accept their parts in the sad events associated with Le Rucher.

Take Aways—Heal the Body!

…you are the body of Christ
I Corinthians 12:27

...the body belongs to Christ
Colossians 2:17

I encourage us all to consider the key messages in the Professional Review as well as in all seven pod-posts. This is especially true for many colleagues and people related to the protracted NCI fraud and the ongoing, inadequate responses as well as the dismissals. I yearn to see the broken Body of Christ healed. The brokenness is not going away without walking in the light. Who has the moral courage to change course and do what is right?

"Review and learn from what happened,
support good practice, and restore relationships."
(Professional Review, p. 113)

”The time has come for the truth to be known and justice to prevail, without which there can be no proper basis for organizational health and reconciliation.  For everyone involved it is not too late to act with integrity and seek redress, both publicly and privately."
(Professional Review, Overview)

“These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord…Therefore love truth and peace.”
 Zechariah 8:16,19

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support. My prayers and voice will continue on behalf of specific leaders, people, and organizations in the Church-Mission Community--for genuine contrition and resolute action. I will be sharing periodically over the next few months en route to part two of the Into Integrity FAST (to start around the time of the UN's International Anti-Corruption Day, 9 December).

Take a stand, Speak out. Live in integrity
And spread the word.

Kelly

Notes
I am doing the Into Integrity FAST in the spirit of the consecrated fast and repentance called for by the prophet Joel (Joel 1:14).  And I am doing it in line with the concerns and requests in the Shine the Light-Together petition and by its signatories.

--Integrity is moral wholeness—living consistently in moral wholeness. Corruption is moral rottenness, the opposite of integrity--the distortion, perversion, and deterioration of moral goodness, resulting in the exploitation of people.

--For information/updates on NCI and anti-corruption resources, see the latest postings from the PETRA People Network.

A Summons to a Global Integrity Movement: Fighting Self-Deception and Corruption, our article  in the Lausanne Global Analysis, March 2018. "In this article we distill some of the lessons we have learned over the past 15 years in promoting integrity and confronting corruption. Why is it hard to live up to our moral and ethical aspirations? We reflect on the reality of dysfunction and deviance, highlight the challenge of self-deception, describe anti-corruption resources, and summon the church-mission community (CMC) to a global integrity movement marked by righteousness and relevance."

--Jesus' words in Luke 6: 17-49 and Mathew 10: 16-42 (The Message) have been so helpful to me, providing  instructions, warnings, perspectives, and motive checks especially about hypocrisy. Some excerpts:

"Don’t be intimidated. Eventually everything is going to be out in the open, and everyone will know how things really are. So don’t hesitate to go public now. Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life—body and soul—in his hands. (Matthew 10:26-28). Your task is to be true, not popular….It’s who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over into true words and deeds” (Luke 6:26,45)

God’s Love Call-Command to Us
and my prayers for us

Warm greetings!

A reminder
of the purpose of my Into Integrity FAST. It is to call attention to--and confront--the lack of disclosures by specific organizations/leaders/people affected by the international Nordic Capital Investment KB fraud (NCI) as well as the related dismissals that Michele (my wife) and I have received. I am fasting for genuine contrition and striking for resolute action within the Church Mission Community (CMC).

Reflections on FAST Day 18
(combined food FAst and hunger Strike)

In this pod-post I emphasize God’s love calling us to repent and to deepen our relationship with Him and others. I share some core excepts from the PETRA People weblog focusing on the command for repentance given by Christ—His love calls--to five of the seven churches in the book of Revelation (chapters 2,3). What is true of these churches in Asia Minor in the first century AD continues to be relevant for the Church-Mission Community today.

Authentic repentance—the turning away from and shunning sin and turning towards and embracing God--is a normal and necessary part of our Christian lives. And at times much more so than at other times. This type of repentance is sorely needed in the specific integrity and corruption issues which are addressed in the PETRA People weblog, the Shine the Light-Together petition, the PETRA Statement 2012, the Professional Review, court documents, and here in the Into Integrity FAST.

In particular, and in line with forgiveness, I want to reach out again to the leaders who have dismissed us from organizations, leadership positions, and serious responsibilities. Many of these leaders have a major responsibility to assist in verifiable, detailed disclosures and independent reviews regarding how NCI has affected them and their organizations. I am praying that today, to hear God’s voice, his love call-command, without rationalizations or hardening your heart.

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Today and all weekend, I am praying prayers of grace, mercy, forgiveness. I am interceding in the Spirit, confronting the Evil One, praying that the incarnate Word of God—the incisive Sword of the Spirit, the illuminating Spirit of Light—will penetrate deep into your souls and spirits: especially for you, Lynn, Iain, John; Tom, Jim, Steve;  Donovan, Don; Bill; Bertil, Rajendran, and seven others unnamed here. Eighteen of you and your spouses. And for Michèle and me, sinners in need of God’s mercy. And I assure you, as have many others: I do not have some type of psychological disorder; I do not need some type of psychological or psychiatric input or care; and I do not need some type of spiritual direction of a sacramental type or otherwise. I am not afraid to whistle blow or of its consequences; I am committed to love truth, peace, and people.

Pray with me also, for all of our putting on the full armor of God, the armor of light, to confront the schemes of the Wicked One, the Thief who comes to kill, steal, and destroy the peoples of our world and ourselves; the Lord rebuke you Satan, even the Lord who has chosen His Beloved Bride; knowing that our weapons are divinely powerful for tearing down strongholds; get behind us Satan, for we set our minds on the purpose of God and not on our own or others; setting our faces like flint to go to Jerusalem with Jesus, laying down our live in obedience to suffer outside the walls of Jerusalem with Him; for it is written you shall fear and worship God alone; knowing that this type of the demonic only comes out with prayer and fasting; and we will see the Prince of the power of the air falling like lightening from the skies, and we rejoice.

And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

Do not be afraid. I am praying for the courage to walk in integrity and to confront corruption, including our own hypocrisy, and any lofty, corrupt thing raised up against the knowledge, character, and purposes of God. And I acknowledge, and warn again, that the only thing necessary for corruption to flourish in our lives, organizations, communities, nations, and the world,  is to do nothing about it, or to do some ineffective, non-resolute “thing” and then to move on, self-justified and with consciences placated and livelihoods protected. May zeal for our Father’s house consume us, for His sake and glory, and for the healing of His Body of all nations, peoples, tribes, and tongues.

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis, dona nobis pacem.

Five Love Call-Commands for Repentance
Lessons from Five Churches (Revelation 2,3)
Excerpts from the PETRA People weblog, 2018

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Church name: Ephesus
Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place--unless you repent.” (Revelation 2:5, NASB)

This entry highlights the importance of repentance for personal and organizational integrity. It also includes verbatim the last two Updates (Healing the Body: Living in Integrity--Loving Truth and Peace) which summarize many of the efforts by the PETRA People Network (PP Net) and summon the assistance of the people and the organizations affected by the Nordic Capital Investment KB fraud (NCI).

Those “affected” refers to the specific investors-victims, organizations-ministries, staff-leaders, and any others who received/lost money in this scheme or were somehow impacted. It also refers to the thousands of people who are or were part of these organizations-ministries (including Board members and supporters) and who have a moral responsibility to call leaders and others to account: to disclose, conduct independent reviews, and where there are “net positive” gains, to return money to victims.

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Church name: Pergamum
The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this...repent, or else I am coming to you quickly,
and will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.
(Revelation 2: 12,16 NASB)

This entry continues the recent emphasis on the importance of personal and organizational repentance. By repentance we mean heart-felt contrition and serious behavior change. Repentance is not shaming or demeaning. Rather it is good, normal, freeing, and life-giving. In particular the entry points out the grace of God that leads to repentance and restitution. Yet it also stresses the possible dire consequences--retribution by God--when repentance does not occur in important matters.

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Church name: Thyatira
These are the words of the Son of God…I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance…Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel…I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways...Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.” (Revelation 2:18-23 NIV)

This entry continues the recent emphasis on the importance of personal and organizational repentance. By repentance we mean heart-felt contrition and serious behavior change.  In particular the entry points out the need to acknowledge, confront, and be healed from widespread, specific corruption in the church-mission community (CMC). Remember, you can be doing good things but still be engaged in corruption, as the above verse from Revelation points out (including tolerating "Jezebel's immorality"--corruption--via rationalization, willful blindness, silence, and inaction).

Repentance is not shaming or demeaning. Rather it is good, normal, freeing, and life-giving. In particular the entry points out the grace of God that leads to repentance and healing. Yet it also stresses the possible dire consequences--judgment by God--when repentance does not occur in important matters.

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Church name: Sardis
I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die...Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. (Revelation 3:1-3, NIV)

This entry continues the recent emphasis on the importance of personal and organizational repentance. By repentance we mean heart-felt contrition and serious behavior change.  In particular, the entry points out the need to acknowledge, confront, and be healed from widespread, specific corruption in the church-mission community (CMC). Remember, you can be doing good things---or even be a "nice" person--but still be spiritually and morally "dead" as the above verse from Revelation points out.

Featured resource: The recent podcast/transcript from National Public Radio (10 May 2018) focusing on a high-profile example of hopefully "waking up": Pope Francis' meeting with and asking forgiveness from victims of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. Could the leaders of the CMC, especially those affected by the NCI fraud, learn a lesson from this Jesuit Pontiff?

repent/metanoeō/μετανοέω

Church name: Laodicea
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot…you are lukewarm. I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked…Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. (Revelation 3:14-22 NIV)

The NCI Summary and Summons Continue. This entry also includes verbatim the last four Updates (Healing the Body: Living in Integrity--Loving Truth and Peace) which summarize many of the efforts by the PETRA People Network (PP Net) and summon the assistance of the people and the organizations affected by the Nordic Capital Investment KB fraud (NCI).

It is important to realize that the Swedish court documents (released in 2010 and 2011) indicate that it was primarily Christians, Christian organizations, and Christian ministries that were affected by NCI. Some of the main ones were part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), including Mercy Ministries, Le Rucher, and Mercy Ships. Youth For Christ Switzerland was used as an address for one of the main NCI promoters for NCI activities and Crossroads Church in Ferny-Voltaire, France had many members who heard about and invested in NCI.

Take Aways--Pulling it all Together

I encourage us all to consider our ways, and for many colleagues and people, to do so regarding the protracted NCI matter and dismissals. God’s love call is a tough love call and command for repentance, and the Spirit of Light, is jealous to reside in our entire being. To summarize and apply the five Petra People weblog entries reflecting on five of the churches in Revelation:

Seek healing for yourselves, people, and organizations. Embrace restitution not retribution.
Stop tolerating Jezebel—condoning, ignoring, practicing immorality in your midst.
Stop sleeping and wake up. Confront moral and spiritual compromise.

Take a stand, Speak up. Live in integrity
And spread the word.

FAST Day 15/40--Go Women! Pray the Devil Back to Hell

Following Jesus to Confront Corruption
Take a Stand--Speak Out--Live in Integrity
Pod-Post 5

How the women in Liberia/West Africa confront a horrific war and corruption.
Film description and links below.

Cry loudly, do not hold back; raise your voice like a trumpet, and declare to My people
their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins.
(Isaiah 58:1)

So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
(Matthew 10:26-28)

Warm greetings!

A reminder
of the purpose of my Into Integrity FAST. It is to call attention to--and confront--the lack of disclosures by specific organizations/leaders/people affected by the international Nordic Capital Investment KB fraud (NCI) as well as the related dismissals that Michele (my wife) and I have received. I am fasting for genuine contrition and striking for resolute action within the Church Mission Community (CMC).

Reflections on FAST Day 15
(combined food FAst and hunger Strike)
.
I have been praying specifically for women and for specific women the last three days. I am praying for the women, women-leaders, and spouses of men-leaders who have been affected by the NCI fraud, including their organizations. And women connected to our dismissals. And I am praying for the women who are tracking with the Into Integrity podcasts and postings. Hence, praying for many of you. The essence of my prayers:

Go women!
May your courage and good sense win the day!
Stay the moral course regardless of whatever others do or say.
And may you emulate the strength, virtue, and wisdom in the fear of the Lord
of people that we have so esteemed down through history (Hebrews 11).

Three Examples
1. Old Testament: Deborah (prophetess-leader) and Jael (common woman), believing, obeying, and praising God. “Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying, “That the leaders led in Israel, that the people volunteered, bless the Lord!....My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel, the volunteers among the people; bless the Lord!....Most blessed of women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; most blessed is she of women in the tent…“Thus let all Your enemies perish, O Lord; but let those who love Him be like the rising of the sun in its might.” (Judges 5:1-2, 9, 24, 31)

2. New Testament: Mary (common woman) and Elizabeth (common woman), believing, obeying, and praising God. And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her….And [Elizabeth] cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!...And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.” …And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; for behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.” (Luke 1:38,42, 45-48)

3. Liberia: Pray the Devil Back to Hell (2008) Watch the film trailer (two minutes). This inspiring documentary “chronicles the remarkable story of the Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women--ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim - came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country's civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about a agreement during the stalled peace talks. A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.” (quote from the film website) Also available via YouTube rental.

My takeaway from the above three examples:
There is always a blessing for obedience—for putting faith into action, for freely volunteering, for taking risks, for leading, for laying down your life for the good of people, for cooperating with God in line with the Lord’s word and for not being afraid to do what is right. A related quote from Martin Luther King Jr. comes to mind.

Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability; it comes through the tireless efforts of men willing to be co workers with God, and without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation. We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right. Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, 16 April 1963

Perhaps it will be the through the tireless efforts of courageous and virtuous women, who as co-workers with God, will model and call for “genuine contrition” and “resolute change” within the Church-Mission community. May today’s Deborahs, Jaels, Marys, Elizaabeths and women like those in Liberia take the lead to rise up and pray the devil back to hell. I sincerely hope and pray so.

Go women!
Be blessed and be a blessing.

Take a stand, Speak up. Live in integrity
And spread the word.
